The design concept for Pugu Hills prioritises Natural, African, Swahili Coast, Tranquility, Local Materials and openess. The Pugu Hills Lodge situated between the Coastal Forest Reserve of Pugu and the Mega City of Dar es Salaam, handles the abrupt transition from ancient Nature to Modern Life Urban by combining natural materials with modern comfort in its architecture and by combining strips of gardens with untouched naturally forested areas. The history of the Swahili Coast and its visitors can be traced back in the diiferent designs of the four yurt-like en suit 'bandas". The manager's house and 'bandas' hidden in the Forest provide a Nature Experience like a Wildlife Hide from which the daily routines the sounds and scent of Nature can be enjoyed.
The bamboo hall constructed in the early 1990s is the central gathering place of the guest and staff. This breezy place with its Nature Swimming Pool sets the standards for uniqueness of the Pugu Hills Lodge and its favourable environmental setting on the two foothils of the Pugu Ridge.
